for every child.
Every year in November, the Philippines observes National
Children's Month. This month-long celebration aims to provide Filipino children
with a safe environment, a good education, and access to healthcare. Dr. Jose
Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, once stated that the youth are the
nation's future and that investing in children is critical to the betterment
of the next generation. This holiday is also motivated by empathy. As a
third-world country, most families struggle financially, and children bear the
brunt of the burden. This month focuses on how we can assist and support them.
Many countries around the world had begun celebrating
'Children's Day' before the Philippines started observing National Children's
Month. It began in June 1857 when Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard conducted a
special service for the children. He initially called it 'Rose Day,' then
'Flower Sunday,' and finally 'Children's Day.'
On November 20, 1989, the Philippines became the first
country to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The
National Youth Commission (N.Y.C.), the Council for the Welfare of Children
(C.W.C.), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (D.S.W.D.) were
tasked with developing activities, plans, and charitable events to assist needy
children.
Under Republic Act No. 10661, late Philippine President
Benigno Aquino III declared November to be the official National Children's
Month in the Philippines in 2015.
